Nitrogen fixing, suckering, super hardy when established shrub. Needs some watering and benefits from mulch in the first year or two, but then they are off to the races, suckering, growing like mad, providing loads of nutrient rich berries. The fruit has a very citrus like sourness, and contains lots of omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. In Europe they are used widely for cosmetics and human nutrition. Let’s get them going here in the US! They make an incredible nurse plant in early successional landscapes, but will not tolerate shade, dying back over time. Has not been shown to be invasive at all
Dioecous. Needs at least one male pollinator per 3-8 females. Plant males where their pollen will blow onto female flowers, or in clusters of female plants around a male.
