Currants and Gooseberries
Hardiness: zone 3-8 (need afternoon sun protection in zone 6b and warmer)
Amazing resilient plants, will benefit from shade in zone 6 or higher. Also fruit even in deep shade, but will be more productive with some sun. Like rich soils, like many fruiting plants. All currants and gooseberries are high in antioxidants and other medicinal compounds.
Gooseberries have thorns, creep around through tip layering, and are super delicious sweet and tart when ripe
Green Gooseberry - nice sour gooseberry flavor, gets a slight purple blush when fully ripe
Amish Red - delicious watermelon candy flavor
Black Velvet - deeper flavor, very sweet
Black currant have a musky flavor, good sweetness when fully ripe (let them get fully ripe on the plant!)
Minaj Smyrou - very sweet, little musk
Crusader - smaller berries and more tart/musky than Minaj - makes more berries
Titania - vigorous and heavy bearer, plant just this one if you want lots of fruits for preserves
Black Currant - improved variety, lost the tags
White currants taste a bit like grapes to me, very mild delicate flavor. Delicious eaten out of hand
Red currants are sour, but some people eat them fresh (myself, included), makes an excellent cranberry like preserve - could be one of a few varieties but we’ve lost the tags. They all are good
